Brother-in-law’s Dell Inspiron 1420
by atai @ 18:17 | Filed under: misc

Last week, my brother-in-law asked me to help him get a notebook. As always, my first recommendation would always be DELL simply because price-wise and service-wise, they are very good (at least in Malaysia anyway).

So after asking him a few questions, like what he intends to do with the notebook and what is his budget, I suggested he go for Dell Inspiron 1420. Actually, for this case, asking for the purpose was redundant because eventually we got a very high spec notebook - his budget allowed it! Basically the notebook comes with an Intel Core2 Duo Processor (T5450 @ 1.66Ghz and 2MB cache), 2GB RAM, 160GB harddisk, 2MB integrated webcam, DVD Writer, Bluetooth, wifi-enabled, 3 years complete cover, etc… His only request - he wanted it to be Expresso brown.

It arrived today. And it comes preloaded with Windows Vista. So, first task, reinstall with Windows XP (yes, Windows Vista really sucks, IMHO). This is the one bit I don’t like about Dell — they don’t have option to install with Windows XP. So have to buy another license! Bummer…

  4. kim leong, i just can’t la… HP still not up to mark in many ways… wait till HP can buck up on its offerings and more importantly, post sales warranty and services.

ya, if HP sincerely wants my feedback, I’m more than happy to share my views. :)

  5. i’m surprised to hear that, because my perception is that HP is beating Dell in terms of customer service. anyway, do give feedback to HP on this, and it will be looked at.

  6. Just bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 few weeks back, about the time you bought for your in-law. (T5450 with 2GB, with red casing)

But, certain models actually allows you to select Windows XP instead of Vista. I got a basic Vista, but seems good thus far. I hated the Vista type for the Start Menu and changed it to the classic style. The rest seems ok…getting use to it. XP will also be discontinued soon. So why not embrace Vista? :P

And i sold off the 1GB of RAM to buy a 2GB RAM to make it 3GB now. Cost of upgrade is RM70 after selling of the 1GB RAM.

    Two thumbs up for Dell!

  7. sherman…

XP is the the favoured OS coz certain simple task is now made very complicated in Vista. also, there are still some ‘compatilibity’ issue with Vista. and to be honest, i dun see anything ’special’ about Vista as compared to XP. works almost the same like XP but consumes more resources… yucks!
