Engineers
by atai @ 21:17 | Filed under: misc

I used to make fun of my engineer friends. I would tease them and crack jokes about the nerdy engineers. I used to also believe there’s no such thing as a handsome engineer and that they have no life — they would just work and work and work. And I used to joked that engineers are people who ‘fix’ something that is working until it is broken.

I think I have been very cruel to engineers… I guess as we age mature, we begin to see that sometimes, we are wrong about our opinion. There are handsome engineers. There are engineers who have a healthy balance of work and fun…

By the way, I just got my business card (In case you didn’t know, I got a new job)…

My new business card

  2. Great to hear you are in support line, but don’t be too proud if you really on those support 24 by 7. I was once in this line, luckily I was still single then.

  3. Engineers = $$$$ back in 1993. Well not anymore. Used to walked passed this big house and someone said to me, you know this guy is in his 30s and he is an engineer.
Yup back then engineers in their 30s can afford a brand new Honda Prelude. Now …… ? Barely breaking even ! And some more must do FOC OT.

Engineer = SLAVERY AND FREE LABOR now in 2008

  4. beg to differ…..whether one is engineer or not, he/she could still reap in the fruit if one desire to do it…….maybe engineers nowadays are more realistic and smart enough to balance up the life. having too much money will tilt the scale….and then generate family problem and security matter………

Without engineer, cant imagine how atai goto work……no BLM, no bus, no LRT, etc……ehehehehhee

I admit that I am a blardee engineer myself……who still slog like Shenzhen buffaloes in sawah padi.

  9. tengster . . . . . . admit it. engineers are lowly paid and treated badly. deadlines cost cost and more deadlines. dud

    Comment by Yan — Wednesday, 21 May, 2008 @ 14:11

  10. Yan: …..I will NEVER admit it. It very depends on the industry one is in.

    1. Construction pay low but hell lot of UTM.
    2. Telco pay quite well if you are in the niche section. But if you are in the common section, then it may be the case of low pay and treated bady.
    3. Risk Management - very wide range
    4. Building Services/COnsultant - Yes and No too…but lot of UTM opportunity
    5. Manufacturing - could be dem yuckiiiee……but could be quite rewarding. I have a friend in this field. Work like Shenshen buffaloes but also highly paid.
    6. Sales Engineer - this job could bring in fat pay cheque…..and could be fully exploited too….hehehee
    7. Engineer turn Management member - this one very valuable. People tend to like engineer’s way of working. No nonsense….1+1 always =2………. But human relationship in engineer could be a problem. Normally engineer is kind of weird and semacam……

Having said so, if there is a chance in my next life, I may not choose Engineering again.

  11. engineers are just like human…they could be handsome and also f-ugly.

    Comment by tengster — Wednesday, 21 May, 2008 @ 21:09

  12. Well not everyone is lucky and the niche and rewarding opportunities, well that is like 3 outta 10 places available. and plus u need to be buddy buddy with someone inside to get in. No buddy means u work like a bull and get paid peanuts. and being in a cow dang ….. how to meet the knight with a shinny armor ????? all those ppl u mentioned, either the mom, dad or uncle kenal people inside or they r damn lucky. Look at jobstreet or jobsdb …. all those JOKERS who r looking for people are Head Hunters and 2 BIT CHINA MAN company….. BAH…….. HEAD HUNTER will tell u. my client is some biggalow shot from some place and damn good at something. In the end when they make their recommendation, oooops, haiya client got someone liao from a rival head hunter. Duh . . . . so u are like this bargaining ball.
then finally u got the engineer job so what. DO DO DO DO DO …… then ??? u r just a doer. to climb up arrr. no chance lorr. look at some managers, 38 years old only what manager 1. duh . . . . . and he start to tell u stories about this and that. LOOSERS’ TALK.

Face it this is not 1993 no more where most goods are from Malaysia. Now got China and Vietnam. This is 2008. Engineering good times are gone. Just ask urself how many outta 10 engineers are rich from their career ? and compare that with marketing and other profession.

  13. Okie…now I know where you come from. I am abit agreed….hehehe…

You see…normally Engineers dont engineer for wealth success. They are more of like tuned to achieve something by designing, inventing, creating, etc…Their successes are more of non-tangible type….

if one compare engineer vs doctor/lawyer/accountant …..then I have to wholeheartedly agree with you. I bet you are one heck of an engineer.

to be fair, i met several succesful engineers who earn alot….though not as much as the lawyers…doctors…accountants….CFO……

    Comment by tengster — Thursday, 22 May, 2008 @ 9:06

  14. that is why i quit being an engineer . . . . . . . :) long time ago. I think being a lawyer is fun. you get to sue people and make them bow to you. and plus no one would ever dare to bully you.
even IT these days are all sub con sub con sub con.

    a) Gold and lotsa Gold

  18. so what wud you buy ?

    Comment by Yan — Thursday, 22 May, 2008 @ 11:31

  19. if I can only choose one, it will be GOLD….

if i can choose several, I will surely balance up my portfolio……cosy safe home, several properties that generate income, stocks, UT, cars for myself, wifey and parents too (no need to grand), child education to better schools, put up a proper retirement plan, charity (building foundation home rather than just giving money), etc……..

then full time be a political or societal blogger to reduce enthropies…….
