Kitchen design
by atai @ 20:17 | Filed under: misc

When we collected the keys to our new home last month, we were given a set of house plan as well. With that, I downloaded Ikea’s Kitchen Planner and got busy. And a few weeks later, this is what I managed to come up with…

What my kitchen will look like
This is how I think my dry kitchen will look like

What do you all think?

  1. my comments would be on the top counter (it will be to high & beyond your reach if you use align it above your window) ..

  2. Wah… Cabinets a little high up. Mrs Tai must be very very tall. Also, where are you putting the fridge? You need to have a space for it. What about cooker hood and hobs?

  3. Let me get this straight, this is ONLY the dry kitchen…that means not including the stove/cooking area right? But does it also means this is some sort of a “for show kitchen” not to “really” be used? I notice when I went back, that most of the new houses have “a dry and a wet” kitchen….wish I have that too.

Anyway, some questions and suggestions (not in order ya!)—
-Will you be eating, like breakfast in this kitchen?

-Is the fridge gonna be where the small box (on the wall–assuming that’s the sign of electrical outlet?!)??

    - The wall unit cabinets are kinda high….but u can keep things that u probably use ONCE a year up there…just have to keep a fold away ladder somewhere easy to excess.

-Can u put some more counter space/cabinets across from the sink? For me..the more counter space the better!

-Is there a door or is it an opening across from the little square?

-The cabinet right under the window (not the sink one), the corner, u should consider putting a “corner” unit…cos it’s very inconvenient to reach in (that’s what I have, and I know the pain).

-Would you consider moving the sink to the shorter counter space, then u can have the drying rack towards the corner and have a stretch of counter space for other stuff.

-I also realized that drawers sometimes can be more useful than cabinets…u can have deep drawers and some shallower ones for utensils — if so, you could (if you move the sink) change the drawers to the first and last unit on the long wall, and replace the cabinet to the middle unit.

    -R u getting double sink?

-don’t forget to put lighting under the wall cabinets!

-what about putting a counter to ceiling cabinet on the long side of the wall—right next to the assuming fridge space? — that kinda cabinets are good for keeping trays lah, baking sheets lah, muffin pans lah, chopping board lah….etc.

-you could also consider putting some clear glass/frosted glass on the wall cabinets for display items, and to bring more light into the room —- just make sure put lightings INSIDE the cabinet too if using the clear glass doors for display times!

That’s all I can think of now…hope my yakking is somewhat useful! =P BTW, congraz on getting ur new house.

  4. Wah Jenny, you are so detail-oriented on house design and stuff. What a good housewife. Haha!
Anyway, my first thought on that was, wah the wall cabinet is too high la. You are going to put yur plates, cups, and other stuff that you use very often there. Can you build the cabinets across the window or on the wall across the white door.
SO this is your dry kithen..so good.. can have dry and wet separate… ours is ALL-IN-ONE…

  5. personally, i think it’s difficult to comment with limited plan shown. i think showing the entire plan consist of dining area, wet and dry kitchen would attract better comments.

Yes, the shelves above the windows are pretty high. But if you have a wet kichen, you may store things that you hardly use at these high cabinets. But again, it depends overall if you have many cabinets, combining both wet and dry. For my house, i hardly touch my high cabinets as i use them to store things i hardly use. but that’s mainly cause i have quite a number of cabinets on the low side and at the wet kitchen…

so, congrats again for getting the key. and happy planning.

  8. Have you consider an island kitchen? I don’t know what is your floor plan, where will be your dining table, but if you have sufficient room, think about this idea. Also, I suggest if you are going to have a normal refrigerator & freezer, consider a built in one, unless if you plan to have a american fridge, then will be different story.

What about considering pamper Mrs Tai with a dishwasher? If you cook everyday at home, this machine will be very useful.

As for cabinets across the white door and the windows, will be more easy to have those push up and down door.

For the 90 degree below cabinet, try to have those 180 degree turn able, with few racks inside. Easy for storing pots and pans.

  10. fridge will be on the top left corner, next to the (white) door.

as for dishwasher… only 2 of us. and we usually cook all-in-one dishes… vege, soup and rice in one bowl. so dun think its going to be worth it getting a dish washer. and its not cheap in Malaysia. :)

  11. Eh, didn’t see this post of urs. In that case, ur cabinets can go all the way to the end of the dry kitchen wall lah, why leave a gap there leh?
